Speaker Among Prioritizes Public Healthcare in Bukedea

Bukedea, Uganda – Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritizing public healthcare to enhance service delivery. During the launch of a free medical camp in Bukedea Comprehensive School, organized by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the local government and the Anita Foundation, Speaker Among emphasized the importance of accessible healthcare for all citizens.

“I am delighted that this dream has become a reality,” Speaker Among stated. “Parliament will continue to support the Ministry of Health in improving healthcare access. I am passionate about health issues, and I am thrilled that we are bringing these vital services directly to the people.”

Recently, Speaker Among inaugurated the Bukedea Teaching Hospital, a non-profit facility that complements government efforts by providing subsidized healthcare services.

Speaker Among highlighted the government’s significant strides in recent years, including the recruitment of specialized healthcare professionals, improved welfare for medical staff, and ensuring adequate medical supplies. “As leaders, our duty is to support government initiatives and serve humanity,” she emphasized.

Dr. Ben Watmon, chairperson of the health camp organizing committee and director of Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, commended Speaker Among for bringing healthcare closer to the community. “Traditionally, healthcare providers wait for patients in facilities, but Speaker Among has brought the services to the people, bridging this crucial gap,” Dr. Watmon said.

Juliet Akayo, a resident of Magoro sub-county in Katakwi district, expressed her gratitude for the camp. Diagnosed with cervical cancer in Soroti but unable to afford treatment in Kampala, she said, “This camp provides me with a valuable opportunity to receive treatment from specialists at the Uganda Cancer Institute at no cost.”

The health camp, which runs until January 25th, has attracted a diverse range of healthcare professionals and institutions, including Mulago National Referral Hospital, the Uganda Heart Institute, the Uganda Cancer Institute, the Uganda Blood Transfusion Services, the Uganda Red Cross Society, the Uganda AIDS Commission, and regional referral hospitals from Kiruddu, Kawempe, Mbale, and Soroti.

The event was attended by members of the parliamentary health committee, led by their chairperson, Hon. Dr. Joseph Ruyonga.
