Hargeisa — Somaliland bids farewell to one of its most influential leaders, Ahmed Mohamed Mohamud Silanyo, who passed away peacefully on Friday night at the age of 86. A towering figure in the region’s political landscape, Silanyo’s contributions spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on Somaliland’s journey toward stability and progress.
Born in 1938 in Buro, Silanyo emerged as a determined advocate for Somaliland’s autonomy. He first entered the political arena during Somalia’s formative years, serving as the Somali Republic’s Minister of Planning and International Cooperation from 1965 to 1973, and later as Minister of Trade during the turbulent 1970s. His strategic acumen saw him take on key financial and legislative roles within Somaliland’s nascent government in the 1990s.
However, Silanyo’s legacy is perhaps most closely tied to his leadership of the Somali National Movement (SNM) from 1984 to 1990. As chairman, he spearheaded the grassroots campaign that toppled the repressive regime of Mohamed Siyad Barre, paving the way for Somaliland’s unilateral declaration of independence in 1991. Though unrecognized internationally, the declaration marked a turning point in the region’s history, setting the stage for Somaliland’s quest for self-determination.
Elected as President of Somaliland in 2010, Silanyo brought with him a vision for reform and development. His administration prioritized infrastructure projects, governance reforms, and fostering political inclusivity. Under his leadership, Somaliland solidified its reputation as a beacon of relative peace in a volatile region. His tenure was not without challenges, as he faced stiff opposition from President Dahir Riyale Kahin during his bid for the presidency. Silanyo’s eventual victory was seen as a testament to his unwavering commitment to change.
Retiring from politics in 2017 due to advancing age and health concerns, Silanyo remained a respected elder statesman, spending his final years in Hargeisa. His passing marks the end of an era for Somaliland, but his vision for a prosperous, self-reliant nation continues to inspire leaders and citizens alike.
Silanyo’s life was one of service, resilience, and unyielding dedication to his people. As Somaliland mourns his loss, the region reflects on his profound contributions to its enduring journey toward recognition and progress
May his soul RIP.
