The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) is advancing its Talent Development Program with a focus on the “TRAIN” agenda. Following the successful launch of the Talent Identification Framework earlier this year, FUFA has shifted its attention to addressing gaps in player development. A stakeholders’ meeting at Jevine Hotel brought together football experts, coaches, and academicians to discuss Uganda’s national football philosophy, player development curriculum, coaching methodologies, and the structural evolution of academies.
The meeting highlighted the decline of Uganda’s dominance in producing technically gifted players and sought to uncover the reasons behind this shift. Stakeholders reflected on the golden era of Ugandan football, exploring gaps in modern player development systems. The need to reintroduce robust frameworks for scouting, training, and retaining top talent was identified as a crucial step forward.
A major topic of discussion was Uganda’s struggle to produce players who can thrive in elite global leagues. Challenges such as limited exposure to international standards, lack of advanced technical training, and inadequate support systems were cited as significant barriers. Addressing these issues was deemed essential for elevating Ugandan players to the global stage.
Participants also examined the changing physical profile of Ugandan players. Once known for producing strong and physically imposing athletes, Uganda has seen a shift in player attributes over the years. The meeting called for renewed focus on grassroots development, nutrition, and physical conditioning to restore this competitive edge.
The stakeholders emphasized the importance of developing a national football identity. A unified philosophy, consistent playing style, and structured progression from grassroots to professional levels were identified as key elements in Uganda’s football transformation. With a clear vision and collaborative efforts, FUFA aims to elevate the country’s football to new heights and solidify its presence on the global stage
