Algeria kicked off their CHAN 2024 campaign in commanding fashion, cruising to a 3-0 win over Uganda in the tournament opener at the Nelson Mandela National Stadium. The North African giants combined tactical discipline with attacking flair, setting an early benchmark for the rest of the competition.

Both teams started with intent, trading early chances, but it was Algeria’s composed passing and fluid movement that gradually took control of the game. The breakthrough came late in the first half when Ayoub Ghezala rose highest to meet a pinpoint corner from Abderrahmane Meziane, giving Algeria a deserved lead at the break.

The second half saw Algeria shift gears. Meziane turned from provider to scorer, doubling the advantage with a calm finish that left Uganda’s defense exposed. Soufiane Bayazid then sealed the result with a clinical third, capitalizing on a slick attacking move that highlighted Algeria’s superior cohesion and tempo.
Uganda struggled to match the pace and organization of their opponents. Defensive lapses and a lack of cutting edge in the final third made it difficult for the Cranes to mount a serious comeback. Algeria’s compact backline snuffed out any threats, preserving a clean sheet with ease.
With this dominant win, Algeria sends a strong message to their Group B rivals. They face Niger next with confidence and momentum firmly on their side. Uganda, meanwhile, must regroup quickly and address their defensive frailties if they hope to revive their CHAN hopes in their upcoming fixture.
