The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced new dates for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), now set to take place from August 2 to August 30, 2025, across Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. This decision, made during a CAF Executive Committee meeting on January 27, 2025, in Rabat, Morocco, comes after the tournament was initially postponed from February 2024 to allow the host nations to complete key infrastructure upgrades.
CHAN, a tournament exclusive to locally-based players, will feature 19 teams divided into four groups. Kenya (Group A), Tanzania (Group B), and Uganda (Group C) will host group-stage matches, while defending champions Senegal lead Group D. Egypt, Algeria, South Africa, Malawi, Gambia, Gabon, and Comoros will compete in a qualification mini-tournament for the final two spots in Group C. The official draw was conducted in Nairobi on January 15, 2025, setting the stage for a competitive championship.
The tournament will be played in some of East Africa’s premier stadiums, including Kasarani Stadium (Kenya), Mandela National Stadium (Uganda), and Benjamin Mkapa Stadium (Tanzania). These cities are currently finalizing upgrades to meet CAF’s standards, ensuring a smooth and successful event. The tournament is also seen as a crucial test run ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania will jointly host.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe expressed confidence in the preparations, stating that the extension will help deliver a world-class CHAN tournament. CAF is expected to release the final match schedule and ticketing details in the coming months, as excitement builds for a competition that will showcase Africa’s finest homegrown football talent.
