The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a landmark increase in prize allocations for the upcoming TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Morocco 2024. The winning team will now receive a record-breaking USD 1 million, doubling the previous top prize. In a bold move aimed at elevating the women’s game, CAF has also raised the total prize pool by 45%, bringing it to a staggering USD 3.475 million.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe expressed enthusiasm about the enhancement, noting it aligns with the organization’s long-term vision to transform and professionalize women’s football on the continent. “This increase is not only a reward for excellence on the pitch but a direct investment in the livelihoods of women players, coaches, and team staff across Africa,” he remarked.
The prize structure rewards performance at all stages of the tournament, with the runners-up taking home USD 500,000, third place earning USD 350,000, and the fourth-placed team receiving USD 300,000. Quarter-finalists will each be awarded USD 200,000, while teams finishing third and fourth in their groups will earn USD 150,000 and USD 125,000 respectively.
This financial boost comes amid rising global attention on African women’s football, with record numbers of fans, broadcast partners, and corporate sponsors expressing interest in this year’s edition. WAFCON 2024 is anticipated to draw unprecedented viewership, setting the stage for a milestone tournament in both competitive spirit and commercial appeal.
With Morocco set to host the spectacle, CAF’s decision signals a new era of growth and recognition for women’s sports in Africa. The revamped prize distribution is expected to inspire higher standards, attract fresh talent, and empower more women to pursue careers in football, both on and off the field.
