CAF Postpones CHAN to August 2025, Citing Infrastructure Needs

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially postponed the highly anticipated TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN), originally slated for 1st – 28th February 2025 in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, to August 2025. The decision follows recommendations from CAF’s technical and infrastructure experts, who emphasized the need for additional time to meet the required standards for hosting such a prestigious tournament.

Significant progress has been made in the construction and renovation of stadiums, training grounds, hotels, hospitals, and other key facilities across the three host nations. However, CAF noted that ensuring these infrastructures meet international standards is crucial for the successful delivery of the championship. CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe praised the efforts of Kenyan President William Ruto, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, acknowledging their leadership and commitment to the project.

“I am impressed with the progress made so far in upgrading football infrastructure in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. With the additional time, I am confident these nations will meet the requisite CAF standards to deliver a successful tournament in August 2025,” Dr. Motsepe stated. He expressed optimism that the tournament will set new benchmarks for CHAN and leave a lasting legacy for African football in the region.

Meanwhile, preparations continue with the draw for the tournament scheduled to take place in Nairobi on January 15, 2025, at 8:00 PM Nairobi Time. CAF is expected to announce the exact commencement date for the rescheduled tournament in due course, further fueling anticipation for what promises to be a landmark event in African football.
