City Tyres, Mandela Group Power a Bigger, Bolder Jinja Open

The sixth edition of the Table Tennis Jinja Open is gearing up to deliver one of its most competitive showdowns yet, buoyed by renewed financial backing from City Tyres. The tournament was officially launched at the company’s Kampala headquarters, reaffirming a partnership that has helped elevate the event into a regional highlight on the sporting calendar.

Set for November 22–23 at St. Andrews Church Hall in Jinja, this year’s competition is expected to draw more than 400 participants. Top talents from Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Ethiopia, and other neighboring nations will converge for two days of high-intensity matches. The event maintains its inclusive format, with U13, U19, senior, and corporate categories competing across singles, doubles, and mixed doubles for a total prize purse of UGX 4 million.

Adding momentum to the tournament’s growth, Mandela Group of Companies has returned as a key sponsor for the second straight year. According to Herbert Basasha, the Group’s Head of Marketing and Communications, their support goes beyond financial contributions. “We’re providing uniforms, allowances, and other support to ensure the success of this tournament,” he said, underscoring the Group’s commitment to grassroots sports.

Defending champion Samuel Ankunda Mbabazi remains one of the event’s main attractions. With three Jinja Open titles already to his name, Mbabazi expressed confidence ahead of the weekend clashes. “I’m ready and looking forward to the games come Saturday and Sunday,” he said, signaling an intense battle for the coveted crown.

With strong corporate backing, a growing international field, and an energized defending champion, the 2024 Jinja Open is shaping up to be more than just another competition. It is becoming a benchmark for regional table tennis development, and a testament to what sustained local investment can achieve.
