The Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) ushered in a new era of leadership at its Annual General Meeting (AGM), electing Kavuma Jackson as the new chairman. He will be joined by Denis Musali as Honorary Secretary and Lelia Namaganda Ondeko as Women’s Representative. The new administration has outlined an ambitious roadmap aimed at strengthening governance, expanding cricket beyond schools, and securing financial stability.
Cricket in Uganda remains outside the priority list for substantial government funding, despite being among the top six funded sports through the National Council of Sports. To compensate for the shortfall, UCA has secured a $5.5 million sponsorship deal with Lyca Mobile, the biggest in its history. Additional financial support comes from Nile Breweries, Dream Catchers, and private benefactors who continue to invest in the sport’s growth.
While schools have been a stronghold for cricket development, the new administration is pushing to expand the sport’s reach beyond the academic setup. Plans include leveraging the Corporate League and Mini Corporate League, as well as promoting social cricket, where enthusiasts play recreational matches. These initiatives aim to introduce cricket to a wider audience, including professionals and the general public.
The newly enacted sports law is another priority for UCA, with compliance set as a key focus for the first four months. Chairman Kavuma Jackson stressed the need to align the association’s constitution and governance structures with government regulations. “We must ensure that our governance framework matches the government’s requirements. Compliance is our top priority,” he stated.
The AGM also saw heated discussions around financial accountability, with UCA’s auditor from Tarvuren GMs facing scrutiny. Members raised concerns over irregularities in the financial report, particularly the association’s UGX 800 million deficit. Some delegates called for quarterly audits instead of annual reviews to enhance transparency and prevent recurring discrepancies.
Despite the challenges, Chairman Kavuma Jackson remains optimistic. He called for unity among stakeholders, government, and partners to help propel Ugandan cricket to new heights. With a strategic focus on governance, financial stability, and expansion, the new leadership is determined to position cricket among the top three most funded sports in Uganda.
