Musasizi Shadat’s Heroics Propel IUIU to Group A Supremacy

In a tense and electrifying encounter, Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) secured the top spot in Group A after a hard-fought 0-0 draw against defending champions Nkumba University on Wednesday evening. The much-anticipated showdown, played at Nkumba University’s home ground, saw IUIU’s goalkeeper Musasizi Shadat put on a masterclass, making a series of incredible saves to deny the reigning champions. With this result, IUIU finished the group stage with 12 points, edging out Nkumba in the standings.

Musasizi Shadat

Musasizi, who has conceded only two goals in the tournament so far, proved to be the difference-maker in this crucial fixture. Nkumba University launched relentless attacks, testing IUIU’s defensive resilience. However, Musasizi’s shot-stopping brilliance frustrated their efforts, particularly in the closing minutes when he made three spectacular saves from Lubega Ismael and Buruhani Tasumba’s free kicks. His commanding presence and reflexes between the posts ensured that IUIU held on to the point they needed to claim the group’s top position.

Despite the match ending goalless, it was far from a dull affair. Both teams created opportunities, with Nkumba controlling possession while IUIU relied on counter-attacks. Masogot Sudaisi and Imunyo Allan Martin marshaled IUIU’s defense with discipline, preventing Nkumba’s forwards from breaking through. On the other end, Otim Calvin and Tamubula Ismail posed a threat but were unable to find the back of the net against a well-organized Nkumba defense.

IUIU’s head coach, Mubaraka Kaggwa, lauded his team’s performance, emphasizing the significance of their defensive solidity and Musasizi’s heroics. “We knew this would be a battle, but our players showed immense character and resilience. Musasizi was outstanding, and his saves were the key to securing this result,” Kaggwa remarked. With this achievement, IUIU joins Uganda Martyrs University, Kampala University, Muteesa I Royal University, and Bugema University in the quarterfinals.

With the knockout stage looming, all eyes will be on IUIU and their star goalkeeper Musasizi Shadat, whose performances have made him one of the tournament’s standout players. Meanwhile, Nkumba University will need to regroup quickly as they prepare for a tougher challenge in the quarterfinals. As the competition intensifies, will Musasizi’s heroics continue to drive IUIU toward championship glory?
