Handball 2024: Uganda’s Queens sharpen up for Kinshasha

With just 12 days left until the highly anticipated African Handball Confederation (AFCON) Championships in Kinshasa, Congo, Uganda’s national women’s handball team affectionately known as the Queens are leaving no stone unturned in their preparations. This year’s tournament, slated to begin on November 27, 2024, promises to be a thrilling display of handball excellence, and Uganda is determined to make a mark on the continental stage.

Uganda’s Road to AFCON

The Queens secured their place in the tournament earlier this year after a series of hard-fought qualifiers that highlighted their grit, talent, and determination. Now, the team is gearing up to take on the giants of African handball, including perennial powerhouses such as Angola, Egypt, and Tunisia.

The championship represents more than just a sporting event for Uganda it’s an opportunity to showcase the rapid growth of handball in the country. Over the past few years, the Uganda Handball Federation has invested heavily in grassroots programs, coaching clinics, and international partnerships. These efforts are now bearing fruit, with the Queens emerging as a formidable force in regional and continental competitions.

Preparing for Glory

Speaking during a recent training session, team player Lillian Achola expressed confidence in the team’s readiness.
“The countdown is on, and our focus is sharper than ever. The players are in great form, and we are working on fine-tuning strategies to ensure we perform at our best in Kinshasa. The Queens are ready to make Uganda proud,” Lillian remarked.

The team has been undergoing rigorous training , with a focus on improving their defensive setups, fast breaks, and tactical awareness. Friendly matches against top local clubs and international sparring partners have also provided invaluable experience.

The Stakes at AFCON 2024

The AFCON Handball Championships will feature 12 teams competing for continental glory and a chance to qualify for the World Handball Championships. Uganda has been placed in a challenging group that includes [Group details if available], but the Queens are undeterred.
