SBAT University finally ended their losing streak in the 11th edition of the Pepsi University Football League with a dramatic 1-1 draw against table-toppers Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) at the Kanyanya grounds in Kawempe Division. The thrilling encounter saw ISBAT deliver a significantly improved performance, keeping the league leaders on edge throughout the match.

Ssentongo Joshua, ISBAT’s captain and talisman, gave his team the lead in the 56th minute, calmly converting a penalty after Katende Bahiira was brought down in the box by Mwesigwa David. The goal ignited a wave of confidence among the hosts, who continued to press for a second, creating several goal-scoring opportunities. However, IUIU’s resilient defense stood firm, denying them a crucial second strike.

Just when ISBAT appeared poised for a historic victory, IUIU’s Mumali Faizal broke their hearts with a late equalizer in the 88th minute, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to ensure his team salvaged a point. Despite the setback, ISBAT’s spirited performance was a marked departure from their previous struggles, signaling their growing competitiveness in the league.
Coach Edwin Laston expressed optimism despite the draw, praising his players for their resilience and tactical discipline. “This result is a stepping stone. The boys showed character, and this point will serve as motivation for the matches ahead,” he remarked. Meanwhile, IUIU remains at the summit of the standings with eight points, while ISBAT, though still at the bottom, has finally opened their account.
The Pepsi University Football League action continues tomorrow with a much-anticipated clash between Makerere University and Ndejje University at Makerere University Grounds. With ISBAT now gaining momentum, their upcoming fixtures will be crucial in determining whether they can build on this breakthrough result.
