Kabila Declares Political Return as Congo Braces for Post-Tshisekedi Power Struggle

Former Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) President Joseph Kabila has announced his return to frontline politics, signaling an ambitious bid to reclaim national leadership nearly six years after leaving office. In a written message to citizens, Kabila framed his 2019 departure as a “pause” rather than an end, pledging to restore peace, prosperity, and state authority in a country still grappling with insecurity and economic instability.

Kabila, who governed from 2001 to 2019, said his decision was motivated by what he described as worsening divisions and unmet promises under his successors. “Those who replaced me have not brought peace or prosperity. I cannot remain a mere spectator,” he wrote. Vowing to defend national resources and ensure wealth reaches future generations, he urged Congolese citizens to prepare for a collective effort to “take back control of the nation’s destiny.”

His comeback, however, comes at a turbulent moment. Kabila faces treason charges filed earlier this year by President Félix Tshisekedi’s government, which accuses him of aiding the M23 rebellion in North Kivu. The former president has denied the allegations, calling them politically motivated attempts to block his return to power. The case remains under investigation, creating a volatile mix of legal jeopardy and political ambition.

The timing of his re-entry is significant. With Tshisekedi constitutionally barred from seeking a third term, the 2028 general elections are shaping into a high-stakes contest. Kabila’s Common Front for Congo (FCC) still commands influence in parliament, and his presence could reshuffle alliances while reigniting old rivalries. Analysts suggest his candidacy could both galvanize opposition forces frustrated by insecurity and deepen political polarization in an already fragile climate.

Kabila closed his statement with a defiant pledge to remain until Congolese citizens “regain the dignity that is due to them.” Whether his return will mark a revival of his political dominance or ignite a new era of confrontation depends on how he navigates mounting legal challenges and a restless electorate eager for change.
