Kampala University Edges KIU to Secure Quarterfinal Spot

Kampala University (KU) booked their place in the quarterfinals of the Pepsi University Football League after a thrilling 2-1 victory over Kampala International University (KIU) at the Yes Centre Arena in Nsambya on Tuesday. The two-time champions needed a win to advance, and they delivered in style, scoring twice within the opening eight minutes.

KU’s attacking intent was evident from the start, with Kimera Joseph heading in a precise cross from Mulwana Joel in the 3rd minute to give his side an early lead. Five minutes later, Wanume Gilbert pounced on a rebound after Kimera’s initial shot was saved by KIU’s goalkeeper Amoni Eddy, doubling the advantage. Despite several promising attacks, KIU’s forwards, Muhwezi and Isaac Musasizi, struggled to convert their chances, leaving KU with a comfortable 2-0 lead at halftime.

KIU returned with renewed determination in the second half, dominating possession and pressing KU deep into their own half. Their persistence finally paid off in the 76th minute, when substitute Mpiima Kenneth capitalized on a rebound to pull one back. Despite their relentless pressure, KIU failed to find an equalizer, as their finishing let them down. KU’s solid defensive organization ensured they held on for the crucial victory.

Elsewhere in Group D, leaders Bugema University were held to a 1-1 draw by Gulu University. Kimuli Denis gave Bugema the lead in the 6th minute, but Busheta Majid equalized ten minutes later. Bugema finished at the top of the group with 13 points, while KU advanced as the best second-placed team with 12 points.

With the group stage now concluded, the quarterfinal lineup is set, featuring Uganda Martyrs University, Kampala University, Bugema University, and Muteesa I Royal University. As KU prepares for the knockout phase, their early attacking prowess makes them strong contenders, but they must address their defensive lapses to keep their title hopes alive.
