KCCA Finally Break the Prisons Curse to Crown Historic Netball Super League Triumph

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Netball Club have written a new chapter in Ugandan netball history after clinching their first-ever National Netball Super League title with a gripping 44–41 victory over long-time rivals Prisons Netball Club at Nakivubo Stadium. The win crowned KCCA as inaugural champions under Netball Uganda’s new executive and marked the end of years of near-misses for the Kasasiro Girls.
The title decider was a high-stakes affair shaped by nerve, discipline, and experience. Guided by veteran coach Fred Mugerwa, KCCA asserted early control, edging a tight opening quarter before building a four-goal cushion by halftime. Prisons responded with renewed intensity after the break, threatening to derail KCCA’s charge, but the city side absorbed the pressure and stayed marginally ahead heading into the final stretch.

In the closing quarter, KCCA traded spectacle for control. Slowing the pace and tightening their defence, they protected a fragile lead with mature game management, denying Prisons a late comeback and sealing a victory that finally reversed the heartbreak of 2023, when the same opponents had snatched the title from them on the final day.

Despite the magnitude of the achievement, the celebrations were subdued. There was no trophy presentation at Nakivubo, with federation officials indicating that the silverware would be handed over at a later date. Still, assistant captain Norah Lunkuse hailed the moment as vindication for years of effort, while Mugerwa credited unity and resilience, noting that a compact squad of 13 players carried the club through a demanding campaign.
KCCA finished top of the standings with 45 points, narrowly ahead of former champions NIC on 44, followed by Prisons and UCU. Yet the season ended amid broader concerns, as the league was blighted by an alarming number of walkovers, raising questions about competitiveness and administration. As KCCA savour a long-awaited breakthrough, Netball Uganda’s new leadership now faces the challenge of strengthening the league’s structure to match the growing quality on the court.
