In a grand ceremony that paid tribute to unwavering devotion over fleeting fame, legendary Ugandan lawn tennis icon John Oduke was bestowed with the esteemed Lifetime Achievement Award at the Real Stars Monthly Sports Awards. This poignant milestone, celebrated at Molecule Restaurant in Kololo, marked a triumphant full-circle moment for the 67-year-old, whose remarkable journey has spanned over five decades, blending 32 years of unparalleled playing prowess with nearly 25 years of selfless coaching and administrative service.

Oduke’s recognition serves as a powerful testament to a life defined by unrelenting consistency and profound sacrifice, offering a compelling counter-narrative to the instant stardom of modern sport. His extraordinary journey, from a wide-eyed 10-year-old boy grasping a racket to a revered national icon, embodies the very essence of lifetime commitment.
“This day is truly unforgettable, a crowning glory for my illustrious career,” Oduke reflected upon receiving the award, his voice trembling with emotion. “It wasn’t just a career, but a labor of love – a series of deliberate choices and sacrifices, including a simple life, early mornings, and delayed personal dreams. This recognition vindicates every early morning, every sacrifice, and every moment of dedication.”
” i managed to achieve all that because i was single, this helped me focus and stay on track. ” said John
Oduke’s indelible legacy is etched into the very foundation of Ugandan tennis. His remarkable career timeline is a testament to the sport’s growth: a groundbreaking tournament win in 1975, representing Uganda on the international stage in the Davis Cup, and a semi-professional stint in Germany that paved the way for future generations. Upon retirement, he seamlessly transitioned to coaching, ensuring the knowledge he gained was passed on to the next wave of tennis stars. Today, he continues to shape the sport from within, serving on the board to represent coaches’ interests, a testament to his unwavering commitment that extends far beyond the baseline.
Alongside Oduke, other outstanding athletes were recognized for their achievements, including Shadia “Mima” Nassanga (Netball), who was honored for her exceptional leadership and precision, guiding Uganda Netball National Team to a second-place finish at the Africa Netball Championship, and Shana Omprakash (Chess), who made history by securing Uganda’s first-ever gold medal at a prestigious continental chess championship.
