Sandra Nabweteme’s clinical finish lifted Santos Laguna to a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Mazatlán on Friday, as the Ugandan forward continued her impressive comeback in the Liga MX Femenil.
The 27-year-old striker netted the decisive goal in the 32nd minute, latching onto a pinpoint cross from Nigerian teammate Vivian Ikechukwu and slotting home from close range. It was Nabweteme’s third goal in 10 appearances this season—and her 10th since joining Santos Laguna last year.
Having recently returned from injury, Nabweteme is proving to be the spark Santos desperately needed. Her movement, composure, and finishing have added much-needed bite to a side still climbing its way up the table.
The result lifts Santos Laguna to 12 points, though they remain 15th in the 18-team league. Still, with Nabweteme regaining form, there’s renewed optimism in the camp as the season enters its final stretch.
Elsewhere in Liga MX Femenil, fellow Ugandan international Juliet Nalukenge made a brief appearance for Atlas Femenil, coming off the bench in their narrow 3-2 defeat to Club América. While her impact was limited, her presence highlights the growing influence of Ugandan talent in the Mexican women’s top flight.
As Santos eyes a late surge, Nabweteme’s return to the scoresheet could be just the turning point they’ve been waiting for.
