Netball Uganda Swearing-In Ceremony Ushers in a New Dawn

In a moment of both gravity and celebration, Netball Uganda welcomed its new leadership in a swearing-in ceremony officiated by Commissioner for Oaths Kenneth Akampulira. Jocelyn Shamsha Ucanda, the newly sworn-in president, pledged to steer the sport towards unprecedented heights. “This is a new era arising in Netball Uganda,” Ucanda remarked, radiating optimism as she took her oath. The ceremony also saw Wasswa George assume the role of Athletes’ Committee Representative for 2025–2028 alongside other key athletes and regional representatives who promise to breathe new life into netball governance.

Ucanda outlined her ambitious 100-day plan in an exclusive interview. Her immediate priority is establishing a fully functional office with both physical and digital presences, including a website and social media handles. “We are going to start our governance structure, advertise for the CEO position, an accountant, and an administrator. Those are the requirements in the act. We know it can’t be done in a fortnight, but all will move by plan,” she asserted. This commitment to structure and transparency is a crucial step toward achieving the federation’s licensing requirements and laying the groundwork for future success.

Funding, a perennial issue for many sports federations, also loomed large on Ucanda’s agenda. Acknowledging the challenges posed by financial constraints, she revealed plans to approach corporate sponsors and maximize revenue from netball properties like merchandise and leagues. “We are going to submit proposals to various companies for support and use our resources to generate income,” she explained. This strategy underscores her determination to ensure sustainable funding for the sport while preparing for Uganda’s participation in the upcoming Nations Cup in the UK.

In response to whether she would collaborate with individuals from the previous regime, Ucanda emphasized inclusivity and pragmatism. “With Netball, so long as one has no criminal record, no issue with government, and displays good character, they are welcome,” she stated. Her administration, which includes seasoned representatives like Hajji Yusuf Kamulegeya (Treasurer) and Richard Muhumuza (Vice President Technical), promises to embrace unity and focus on restoring Netball Uganda to its rightful place at the pinnacle of African and global rankings.
