New Era for African Cricket: Nuwagaba Elected to ACA Board with Bold Vision

Former Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) chairman Michael Nuwagaba has been elected to the Africa Cricket Association (ACA) Executive Board as one of seven new directors for a three-year term. His election, held during the 27th ACA Annual General Meeting in Singapore last week, received overwhelming support, with 19 out of 22 ACA member countries endorsing him unanimously.

Nuwagaba brings with him a forward-looking vision for the development of cricket across the continent. He outlined the board’s immediate priorities, which include commercialization strategies aimed at financially supporting member countries within the next five years. One of the key milestones on the agenda is hosting larger tournaments such as the ACA Cup, scheduled to take place later this year.

In a bid to expand international exposure and opportunities for African players, Nuwagaba revealed that the ACA is set to sign Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with both the Asian Cricket Council and Cricket West Indies. These partnerships are expected to open doors for intercontinental collaboration and competition. Significantly, he also emphasized that 20% of all revenue generated will be reinvested directly into grassroots development programs.

The ACA is now operating under a newly amended constitution, setting the stage for increased activity and innovation within the organization. Plans are underway for new events such as an Africa Premier League and a women’s tournament—both of which are seen as critical for enhancing elite player pathways and ensuring sustainable growth for the sport across the continent.

With a renewed focus on unlocking commercial funding and establishing strategic partnerships, the ACA aims to supplement its current income, which is primarily drawn from member subscriptions and internal reserves. The election of Nuwagaba marks a significant step toward a more dynamic and commercially viable future for African cricket.
