GLASGOW BECKONS: Uganda Targets Global Netball Supremacy at Celtic Cup

The She Cranes, Uganda’s national netball team, are deep in preparation for what promises to be a defining campaign at the 2025 Celtic Cup, scheduled for November 26–30 at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, Scotland. With a potential leap in world rankings on the line, Uganda is not just participating — they’re aiming to conquer.

Currently ranked 7th globally, Uganda has turned their training camp into a high-intensity battlefield, sharpening both skill and synergy ahead of their toughest test yet. The tournament , a ranking event , could see the She Cranes overtake 6th-ranked Scotland and edge closer to automatic qualification for the 2027 Netball World Cup.

“We are trying to learn each other’s movements on court, and the chemistry is really coming through,” said veteran defender Lillian Ajio. “We’re preparing to give it our all. The goal is to climb that ranking ladder.”

For some, this tournament marks a debut on the international stage. Specioza Namukose, from the Police Netball Club, has earned her first national team call-up and is embracing every moment of the experience.

“I’ve learned so much from the senior players. It’s been an eye-opening journey, and I’m committed to working hard to make the final squad for Glasgow,” said Namukose.

The Celtic Cup will feature a competitive round-robin format, drawing top-tier teams from Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, along with invited contenders Uganda, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. It’s a battle not just for pride , but positioning on the global stage.

Netball Uganda General Secretary Mande Amina emphasized the tournament’s importance: “This is more than a cup , it’s a strategic step toward World Cup qualification. Breaking into the top six puts us in a much stronger position for 2027.”

As the countdown to Glasgow begins, the She Cranes aren’t just preparing to play , they’re preparing to make history.
