When Musa Ssegaabwe, the 2024 CRC Champion, unveiled his brand-new Skoda Fabia N5, built by RMC Motorsport in Spain, it was more than just a car launch to the media, it was a statement of intent.
For years, Musa thrilled fans behind the wheel of his legendary Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX, a machine that carried him to victories and ultimately to the 2024 CRC crown. Many believed he could continue dominating with the Evo 9. But champions are driven by vision, not comfort. And Musa’s vision is clear, evolve or be left behind.
As he shared in his interview, motorsport in Uganda is growing fast. Competitors are upgrading to shorter, more agile rally machines like the Ford Proto. To remain at the top and to chase even bigger dreams, Musa needed a car built for modern rally warfare.
The Skoda Fabia N5 is not just another rally car. It is a purpose-built competition machine engineered for speed, balance, and endurance.
Under the hood sits a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine producing approximately 280–300 horsepower. It delivers explosive acceleration while maintaining reliability, crucial for long African rally stages.
The turbo system ensures strong torque delivery, meaning the car pulls aggressively out of tight corners and maintains pace on fast straights.
The Fabia N5 runs on high action racing fuel, designed to maximize engine efficiency and performance under extreme rally conditions.
Weighing roughly 1,230 kilograms, the Fabia N5 is significantly lighter and shorter than Musa’s previous Mitsubishi Evo 9. This reduced weight improves, cornering speed, braking response, acceleration, overall agility on technical stages. Its shorter wheelbase makes it more responsive, especially in twisty sections and narrow African rally routes.
The car is equipped with high-performance adjustable rally suspension systems, designed to absorb heavy impacts from rough terrains. The shocks are engineered to handle gravel, jumps, and unpredictable surfaces – a key advantage for African rallies known for their toughness.
However, African roads are unforgiving. The rough terrain, extreme heat, dust, and unexpected obstacles will truly test the suspension setup. Fine tuning will be critical.
RMC Motorsport, based in Spain, specializes in building and developing competitive rally cars for international markets. Their engineering focuses on performance reliability and adaptability to different rally conditions.
Having the first Skoda Fabia N5 built by RMC Motorsport on African soil and in Uganda places Musa in a unique position both as a competitor and as a pioneer.
While the Fabia N5 is a powerful machine, transitioning from the Evo 9 will not be easy for Musa Ssegaabwe and Mathias Kiyega, the driving style required for a shorter, lighter car is different. Musa will need time to fully master braking points, throttle control, and corner entry speeds.
Being the first of its kind locally may mean limited immediate access to spare parts compared to more common rally cars.
African rallies are among the toughest in the world. Managing engine temperatures and suspension durability will be critical, finding the perfect suspension and differential settings for local conditions will require testing and patience.
But if there is one thing Musa has proven, it is resilience.
Musa Ssegaabwe did not rise to CRC Champion by accident. His journey in motorsport has been marked by discipline, growth, and hunger for success. Together with his trusted navigator, Mathias Kiyega who firmly believes that once they master this car, the performance will speak for itself, the team enters 2025 with renewed ambition.
The fans may miss the Evo 9. It delivered glory. It made memories. It built a champion, but progress demands courage.
By upgrading to the Skoda Fabia N5, Musa is not abandoning his past, he is investing in his motorsport future. He understands that modern competition requires modern machinery. And if everything aligns, preparation, adaptation, faith, and hard work even another championship could be within reach.
Segamu 14 racing team expectations are high. The motorsport community is watching. Fans are waiting for the Fabia’s first competitive appearance in NRC 1, the season opener in Mbale city.
Will it dominate?
Will it redefine Musa’s career?
Will it carry him to another title?
One thing is certain, Musa Ssegaabwe is not stepping into 2025 to participate, he is stepping in to compete at the highest level.
The beast is ready.
The crew is focused.
The championship battle awaits.
And Uganda is about to witness a new chapter in rally history.
