The Uganda Rugby Union (URU) has unveiled a transformative rebranding of its premier and regional rugby competitions, marking a pivotal moment in the sport’s evolution. In a strategic overhaul, the Elite Club Rugby Competition, previously known as the Uganda Rugby Championship, has been rebranded as the Uganda Rugby Premiership (URP). This top-tier league will maintain its competitive structure, featuring a dynamic round-robin stage and high-stakes playoffs, cementing its place as the pinnacle of Ugandan rugby.
In tandem, the second-tier Regional Rugby Leagues have been renamed Championships, aligning them with a cohesive national structure. The revamped leagues are now designated as the Eastern Rugby Championship (ERC), Central Rugby Championship (CRC), Northern Rugby Championship (NRC), and Western Rugby Championship (WRC). This rebranding extends to women’s rugby, with the introduction of the Uganda Women’s Rugby Premiership (UWRP) and corresponding regional championships.
URU described these changes as a cornerstone of its vision to create a structured, professional, and marketable rugby ecosystem. “This realignment is a vital step in fostering growth and ensuring rugby thrives at all levels across Uganda,” the statement read. The union reaffirmed its commitment to supporting players, coaches, fans, and stakeholders as it ushers in this new era for Ugandan rugby.
With this bold rebranding, URU aims to enhance the visibility, competitiveness, and appeal of the sport. The move not only reflects a commitment to elevating rugby’s profile nationally but also positions Uganda as a rising force in the global rugby arena, inspiring confidence and excitement among stakeholders and fans.
