Kampala, Uganda – The Uganda Rugby Union (URU), an affiliate of World Rugby, Rugby Africa, the Rugby Football Union of East Africa (RFUEA), the Uganda National Council of Sports, and the Uganda Olympic Committee, has announced the postponement of the 2024/25 Uganda Cup. This decision was reached after extensive consultations with the URU Executive Committee, club chairpersons, and other stakeholders, prioritizing player welfare and the long-term development of rugby in Uganda.
The postponement follows a compact and demanding rugby calendar that left little room for rest and recovery. URU recognizes the toll this has taken on players and aims to provide adequate rest periods to safeguard their health and performance. “Our players are the core of the game, and their well-being must come first,” said Peter Odong, Hon. Secretary of URU. “This decision ensures we create an environment where athletes can thrive both on and off the pitch.”
In addition to addressing player welfare, this postponement provides an opportunity to realign URU’s annual calendar. The adjustment will allow for better organization of events, ensure smoother operations across competitions, and maintain the high standards of the Uganda Cup. URU is committed to delivering a tournament that reflects the values of rugby while ensuring all stakeholders have ample time to plan and prepare.
While fans await the revised tournament dates, URU encourages continued engagement through various rugby community initiatives designed to sustain momentum and support the sport’s growth in Uganda. These programs will keep the rugby community active and connected as the Union works toward presenting a stronger, more dynamic Uganda Cup.
URU acknowledges the disappointment this decision may cause but remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring the Uganda Cup returns as a hallmark event in Uganda’s sports calendar. Revised tournament dates will be announced in due course.
