Uganda Unveils Official Campaign Calendar for 2025/2026 General Elections

Kampala, Uganda – The Electoral Commission has released the official campaign timeline for the 2025/2026 General Elections, heralding the commencement of a critical electoral cycle in Uganda’s political landscape. The scheduled campaign window spans nearly four months, signaling a period of intensified political mobilization and voter engagement across the country.

Under the outlined program, Local Government campaigns are set to begin on 13 September 2025, followed by Parliamentary campaigns on 23 September 2025. The race for the presidency will kick off slightly later, on 4 October 2025. All campaigns will conclude on 12 January 2026, ahead of the anticipated polling period. The Commission has called for adherence to lawful conduct and inclusive participation throughout the campaign season.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who has held power since 1986, remains a pivotal figure as the nation anticipates the forthcoming polls. Having contested and triumphed in every presidential election since 1996, Museveni’s dominance has been contested by notable opposition figures, including Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere, Dr. Kizza Besigye, Amama Mbabazi, and Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine. Each election cycle has been accompanied by spirited political discourse, disputes over fairness, and persistent demands for electoral reform.

As 2026 approaches, speculation continues to grow over whether Museveni will pursue another term, extending his presidency beyond four decades. Meanwhile, the opposition is expected to regroup and present a unified front, potentially ushering in new contenders or reinvigorating past political movements. Political analysts anticipate a fierce contest shaped by generational dynamics, economic challenges, and governance reform agendas.

With the campaign period now clearly defined, the spotlight turns to political parties, candidates, and the electorate to uphold democratic values. The Electoral Commission has reiterated its commitment to transparency and has encouraged civil society, media, and citizens to actively contribute to a peaceful and credible electoral process.
