Uganda’s Finest Honored: Real Stars Awards Celebrate Legends and Trailblazers

The September 2025 edition of the Real Stars Sports Monthly Awards delivered a powerful blend of nostalgia and national pride, recognizing Uganda’s sporting elite across generations. From Olympic veterans to rising champions in boxing, motorsport, and football, the night shone a well-deserved spotlight on individuals whose grit, passion, and excellence have elevated Ugandan sport both at home and on the global stage.

At the heart of the ceremony was the emotional recognition of Ali Kavuma, who received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. A two-time Olympian who represented Uganda in Seoul (1988) and Atlanta (1996), Kavuma was honored not just for his personal feats but for shaping the next generation. As a coach, he guided Irene Ajambo to become Uganda’s first female weightlifting medalist at the All Africa Games in 2003. His return to the limelight after years outside the sport served as a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of Uganda’s Olympic pioneers.

In a moment that electrified motorsport fans, rally driver Yasin Nasser was celebrated for ending a 26-year title drought by clinching the Africa Rally Championship (ARC). Becoming only the second Ugandan to achieve this milestone after the legendary Charles Muhangi in 1999, Nasser’s triumph broke new ground. In beating veterans like Ronald Ssebuguzi and Julius Ssemmambo, and ending Ponsiano Lwakataka’s dominant run, his victory reignited Uganda’s presence on the continental motorsport map.

Boxing star Muzamiru Kakande added international shine to the awards by securing the boxing accolade. His commanding win in the Commonwealth Super Title fight not only boosted his record to 11 wins (7 by knockout) in 13 bouts, but also reinforced his status as one of Uganda’s premier fighters. Kakande’s achievement highlighted the raw individual discipline and global competitiveness that defines top-tier boxing.

Football recognition went to Vipers SC’s rock-solid defender Hillary Mukundane, whose quiet brilliance in the backline earned him top honors over teammate Allan Okello and SC Villa’s Ibrahim Kasinde. In a sport often dominated by strikers and goal-scorers, Mukundane’s award underscored the importance of defensive leadership and tactical discipline , proving that game-changers wear more than just the number 9 shirt.
