UPL Confirms UGX 500M Prize Revolution and Bold New Three-Round Format Kicks Off September 26th

The Uganda Premier League (UPL) is set for a dramatic transformation in the 2025/26 campaign after FUFA confirmed the introduction of a new three-round competition format alongside a record UGX 500 million prize pool.

A League Reshaped

In a landmark announcement, the FUFA Executive Committee revealed that the forthcoming season will no longer be decided solely on the final league table. Instead, the 16-team competition will be contested across three distinct rounds, each carrying its own prize money.

Round One champion: UGX 20M

Round Two champion: UGX 30M

Round Three champion: UGX 50M

Clubs that manage to sweep all three rounds will pocket an additional UGX 100M jackpot , the biggest ever payout in Ugandan club football.

Rewards for All – From Top to Bottom

For the first time in league history, even the bottom-placed sides will be guaranteed financial returns. Teams finishing last in Rounds 1 and 2 will each receive UGX 1M, while the Round 3 wooden spoon side secures UGX 18.5M.

This ensures that every club, regardless of performance, shares in the commercial growth of the league.

Comparing to Last Season

The shake-up marks a radical departure from the 2024/25 structure, where only the final standings determined payouts. Last season’s champions SC Villa took home UGX 60M, with BUL FC earning UGX 40M and Vipers SC UGX 35M.

Now, consistent performance across the season, rather than a single late surge, will be the ultimate measure of success.

FUFA’s Vision

FUFA officials hailed the move as a forward-thinking reform designed to raise competitiveness and reward ambition at all levels.

“This is a bold and progressive step. It ensures clubs stay competitive across all stages of the league while increasing the financial gains for everyone involved,” a FUFA spokesperson explained.

Financial Impact: Boost or Burden?

For club owners and administrators, the financial implications are significant. The guaranteed payouts , even for strugglers , mean improved cash flow and the ability to plan budgets more confidently.

Operational Stability: Smaller clubs will benefit most, with bottom-table payouts providing relief for travel, player salaries, and infrastructure.

Investment Opportunities: The prospect of winning a round encourages investment in better squads and youth development.

Sponsorship Magnet: With more televised drama and prize injections, the league becomes a more attractive platform for sponsors and broadcasters.

However, experts warn of increased financial risk for clubs that overspend chasing round victories without balancing long-term sustainability.

Player Welfare: Fatigue and Injury Fears

While the format promises excitement, it also raises concerns about player workload. Three rounds of high-intensity football effectively turn the season into three mini-tournaments, each carrying pressure of its own.

Increased Intensity: Players will be under constant competitive strain with fewer “quiet” games, raising the risk of muscle fatigue and overuse injuries.

Medical Demands: Physiotherapists and fitness coaches face added responsibility to manage recovery cycles, especially in congested fixtures.

Uganda Ex International Vincent Ggaliwango observed:

“It’s fantastic for the fans, but players will feel the grind. Clubs with thin squads may suffer burnout before the season’s end.”

The Squad Depth Factor

Perhaps the biggest variable in the new format is squad depth.

Advantage to Bigger Clubs: Powerhouses like Vipers SC, KCCA FC, and SC Villa, with deeper squads and stronger benches, will be better placed to rotate players without sacrificing quality.

Tougher for Smaller Sides: Mid-table and lower clubs, often reliant on 12–14 core players, may struggle to cope with the relentless demands of three rounds. Injuries or suspensions could derail entire campaigns.

Youth Development Spotlight: Clubs with strong academies and reserve systems could gain an edge, as fresh legs from youth setups may prove decisive across multiple rounds.

Predicted Winners and Losers Under the New System

Favourites to Thrive

Vipers SC – With one of the deepest squads in the league and strong financial backing, Vipers are built for consistency across multiple rounds. Their ability to rotate and still compete makes them prime contenders.

KCCA FC – The “Kasasiro Boys” boast youth depth and tactical versatility. With their academy pipeline, they are well positioned to maintain freshness and challenge for round wins.

SC Villa – The reigning champions, buoyed by history and a strong fanbase, have the financial pull to strengthen further. If they balance rotation smartly, they remain a top contender.

Clubs That Could Struggle

Maroons FC – Competitive but with a thinner squad, they risk running out of steam as the season’s demands mount.

UPDF FC – Discipline and organisation may win them battles, but without depth, sustaining form across three rounds looks challenging.

Newly Promoted Sides – While ambitious, the step up to facing elite clubs in three competitive phases could expose financial and tactical limitations.

Dark Horses

BUL FC – Consistently improving, BUL could target a round victory, especially Round 2 or 3, where depth and mid-season form matter most.

Express FC – If their financial structure stabilises, the Red Eagles have the fan power and resilience to upset bigger names in a round.

And so, the chessboard is redrawn. The giants with sprawling squads are sharpening their blades, the underdogs are daring to dream, and the middleweights are plotting surprise ambushes.

The Uganda Premier League is no longer a marathon, it is three battles stitched together, each carrying weight, each carrying reward, each carrying risk.

Three rounds. Three battles. One destiny.
The 2025/26 UPL won’t just crown a champion , it will test resilience, reward consistency, and create more drama than ever before.
With UGX 500M on the line, every whistle, every tackle, every point matters. It is a new theatre of dreams, of fatigue, of glory.
Three rounds. One destiny. Five hundred million reasons to believe.
