Victory at Last: Yasin Nasser Crowned 2025 African Rally Champion After 26-Year Wait

Morogoro, Tanzania — History was made in the dusty highlands of Tanzania as Uganda’s own Yasin Nasser, together with co-driver Ali Katumba, clinched the 2025 African Rally Championship (ARC) title in spectacular fashion — marking the end of a 26-year drought since Uganda last held the coveted continental crown.

Driving under the banner of Team Moil, and sponsored by Moil Energies and Bam Petroleum, Nasser’s victory came down to the finest of margins: just one point. He finished the season with 135 points, narrowly edging out Kenya’s fierce competitor Samman Vohra, who ended with 134. It was a showdown worthy of legend — a true test of grit, determination, and rally spirit.

The final leg of the ARC the Mkwawa Rally of Morogoro — was always going to be decisive. Nasser entered the Tanzanian round as the points leader, but with Vohra breathing down his neck, nothing was guaranteed. What unfolded was nothing short of heroic. Nasser and Katumba drove not just with speed, but with heart, wisdom, and national pride. Against technical terrain, unpredictable weather, and immense pressure, they delivered a performance that will be talked about for decades.“They were fighting with lions,” And indeed, Nasser snatched the title from the very jaws of defeat.

Uganda last tasted ARC glory in 1999, when the late Charles Muhangi brought home the title. Since then, generations of fans have waited, hoped, and watched as that dream remained out of reach — until now.

Yasin Nasser’s journey was not an overnight miracle. It began humbly in 2015, behind the wheel of a Subaru, battling through Uganda’s National Rally Championship circuits. By 2019, he had already claimed his first NRC title, and again in 2023. But it was his bold move in late 2023 switching to the Ford Fiesta Rally2 that marked a turning point.

Backed by Moil and now steering a modern, competitive machine, Nasser had one thing in mind: continental domination. And he didn’t just dream — he delivered.

Throughout the 2025 season, Nasser showed consistency and composure, race after race:

Safari Rally Kenya – A bold statement of intent.

Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally – A proud podium on home soil.

Mountain Gorilla Rally, Rwanda – Flawless chemistry and unshakable focus.

Rallye International du Burundi – Strategic brilliance under pressure.

Mkwawa Rally of Morogoro, Tanzania – The final conquest.

Each stage was a story of resilience, and each point was earned through sweat and strategy.

Yasin Nasser’s title is more than personal glory. It’s a victory for the Ugandan motorsport fraternity, for Team Moil, for every fan who believed, and for a nation that has waited a quarter-century to once again stand atop African rallying. He saved us, “After 25 years — he brought the trophy home”. And indeed, Yasin Nasser didn’t just race. He carried the hopes of a nation across borders, over mountains, and through fire — and returned triumphant.

Nasser and Katumba’s triumph wasn’t luck. It was the result of strategic investment, expert team management, advanced machinery, and unwavering sponsorship support from Moil Energies and Bam Petroleum. Together, they’ve shown the world what Ugandan talent can achieve when given the tools and trust to succeed. This win will inspire a new generation of drivers, mechanics, engineers, and fans. It sets the stage for Uganda to become a true rally powerhouse on the African continent.

From a Subaru dreamer to a Ford-powered champion, Yasin Nasser has become a symbol of Ugandan excellence and African resilience. His journey is proof that with vision, passion, and belief even the longest droughts can end in glory. The 2025 ARC crown rests on a Ugandan head once again. And this time, it might just stay for a while.
