Uganda women handball team faces financial hurdles ahead of Africa nations cup
After 45 years, Uganda’s national handball team is at risk of missing the Africa Nations Cup due to a severe financial crisis. Despite their remarkable qualification last year, the team is struggling to secure the necessary funds for travel and participation. Coach Ssali voiced frustration, stating, “The team is struggling to get funds. Government has not yet drawn more attention to us.”
Out of the 20 players required, the federation has only paid for 14 visas, leaving six players and four officials in limbo. The situation is worsened by unpaid allowances and limited resources, further jeopardizing the team’s readiness for the tournament.
The team president has worked tirelessly to raise funds but continues to face significant challenges. With the departure deadline looming on Monday, the administration is urgently appealing to partners, sponsors, and well-wishers to intervene and help the team reach the tournament.
Missing this prestigious event would not only disappoint the players but also mark a lost opportunity for Uganda to showcase its talent on the continental stage. The team’s plight highlights the broader neglect of underfunded sports in the country.
Calls are growing for increased government investment and support for lesser-prioritized sports to ensure national teams are adequately prepared and supported when representing Uganda internationally
