From Hoima, Mbarara to Masaka, Jinja to Kampala — These Women Are Driving Change

On 16th August 2025, a defining moment took place for Women in Motorsport Uganda (WIMU) — a general meeting chaired by none other than the  president, Dr. Evelyn Kobusingye. The gathering was electric, filled with energy, pride, and the relentless drive of women who are transforming the face of motorsport in Uganda.

Moderated by a trailblazing co-driver — Zubedah Ali made history as the woman Clerk of the Course (COC) at the highly anticipated FMU Sprint at Garuga— this meeting was more than just an agenda review. It was a celebration of milestones, a call to unity, and a bold declaration that women are not just participating in motorsport — they are leading it.

In her address, Dr. Kobusingye highlighted the impactful journey of WIMU’s first year under her leadership:

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) with Heart:
Their maiden CSR outreach in Hoima (2024) saw WIMU distributing sanitary towels, school books, and drinking bottles to empower young girls and women in the community. This wasn’t just charity — it was legacy-building.

Breaking Barriers in Rally Events:
Women took center stage in FMU National Rally Championship events, with standout leadership during NRC 1 hosted by MPU Club in Mbarara. From event manager to CROs — women were everywhere, proving they can run the show just as fiercely as they race it. WIMU left their mark in Motorcross MX1 in Masaka, organized by Southern Motor Club. With a lady at the helm, women showed solidarity, stepping up to support, lead, and inspire.

Environmental Stewards at Pearl of Africa Rally:
WIMU took charge of the Environment Department at the Shell V-Power Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally — ensuring motorsport goes hand-in-hand with sustainability and took part in planting trees in conjunction with Segamu 14 consult Racing Team campaign of restoration environment in Mbarara city. It was a proud moment under the supervision of the FMU Environmental Delegates.

WIMU’s compassion reached patients at Mulago Hospital – Cancer Institute women in Motorsport Uganda continue to break barriers and make a powerful impact—both in motorsport and in the wider community. In a heartwarming act of corporate social responsibility (CSR),  their second CSR outreach at Mulago Hospital – Uganda Cancer Institute. During this visit, the group extended their support to cancer patients and caregivers by distributing essential items that can ease their hospital stays and visits. Alongside these material donations, they shared heartfelt words of encouragement, reminding patients that they are not alone and that the community stands with them. This initiative once again proved that Women in Motorsport are not only champions on the track, but also pillars of hope and support in society.

One of the standout moments was their involvement in the first-ever street racing event in Jinja—TT Drags and Drift, hosted at Banana Resort Beach in Nyenga. The event was a huge success, with their strength in teamwork and organisation was also showcased, their ability to put together such a landmark event set a new standard for motorsport in the country.

Another milestone was the Garuga FMU Sprint, where women once again demonstrated their leadership and organisational skills. From technical support to timekeeping, media coordination, and safety, women were involved at every level—proving that togetherness is their strength and that their vision of making motorsport more inclusive is well underway.

The commitment to shaping a better future for women in motorsport remains firm. The goal is to make the sport accessible and welcoming for all strong women—whether they are in the cockpit, administration, technical teams, time control, media, safety, team management, or in the fan base.

Looking ahead, several key activities are still on the calendar before the year ends. On 21st September, women will take the lead in Samuel Watendwa’s Fundraising Sprint. The event will be managed by a female driver, and the entire Women in Motorsport community is ready to lend their support to ensure the success of this noble cause.

In addition, preparations are underway for the Annual General Meeting (AGM) for Women in Motorsport Uganda. As outlined in the constitution, this meeting is a vital platform to review achievements, address key issues, and set the strategic direction for the coming year. It is an empowering space where women’s voices in motorsport are not just heard—but lead.

Furthermore, the women will play a central role in the upcoming medical training sessions aimed at drivers, co-drivers, riders, their immediate caregivers, and safety marshals. These trainings are designed to equip all stakeholders with critical first-aid skills to respond to accidents on track. The aim is clear: no life should be lost for the love of the sport. Women in Motorsport are determined to prioritise safety and preparedness as part of their broader commitment to the sport’s development.

Finally, as the year concludes, there will be a special Awarding Ceremony in December to honour women who have contributed across various sectors in motorsport. Whether in the cockpit, technical arena, media, safety, or team management, these women deserve to be recognised and celebrated. This ceremony will be a moment of pride and reflection, and a call for even more women to join and shine in a sport they deeply love and understand.

The message from Women in Motorsport Uganda is loud and clear: Together, we can. Together, we shine. Through unity, compassion, and a shared vision, they are not just changing the narrative—they are building a legacy.
