Express FC, despite grappling with financial constraints, showcased unwavering grit and resilience to hold league leaders Vipers SC to a dramatic 2-2 draw at the newly revamped Hamz Stadium in Nakivubo. The Uganda Premier League matchday 23 encounter was a pulsating affair, with the Red Eagles stunning their opponents by racing to a two-goal lead in the first half.

Emmanuel Wasswa was the architect of Express’ early dominance, netting a brilliant brace in the 15th and 27th minutes. His first was a precise finish following a fluid team move, while his second was the result of a swift counterattack that left the Vipers backline exposed. The Venoms tried to respond before the break, with Allan Okello rattling the crossbar, but the first half ended in Express’ favor.
In the second half, Vipers SC introduced Siraje Sentamu in place of Frank Katongole, a change that sparked renewed energy in the midfield. Okello eventually reduced the deficit in the 52nd minute with a composed finish. A flurry of substitutions followed, with Vipers intensifying the pressure. Despite Express losing Wasswa to injury and making several defensive switches, they appeared destined to hold on for all three points.
However, the resilient Venoms refused to relent. In a dramatic climax, Gusto Mulongo, who had only been on the pitch for a few minutes, struck a stoppage-time equalizer in the 90+5th minute to salvage a crucial point for the title contenders. Express FC were left heartbroken, but their spirited performance earned plaudits from fans and neutrals alike.
The draw sees Vipers SC remain top of the table with 53 points, just two ahead of second-placed NEC FC, whom they face in a potentially title-defining clash on April 17th. Express FC, though plagued by financial instability, demonstrated that determination and teamwork can still yield commendable results against the league’s elite.
