Patel Capitalizes on Vohra Drama to Win Thrilling Shell V-Power Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally

The 2026 edition of the Shell V-Power Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally 2026 delivered exactly what rally fans had hoped for, speed, heartbreak, strategy, dust, and pure unpredictability across the punishing gravel roads of western Uganda.

In the end, it was Kenya’s Karan Patel together with navigator Tauseef Khan who emerged victorious in their Skoda Fabia after one of the most dramatic finishes the African Rally Championship has witnessed in recent years.

The rally, held in and around Mbarara, proved once again why motorsport remains one of the most unpredictable disciplines in sport. Gravel stages, rough terrain, narrow margins, and relentless pressure turned the event into a true test of endurance, consistency, and mental strength.

From the opening day, it looked like victory belonged to Kenya’s Samman Vohra and Scottish co-driver Drew Sturrock. The duo produced a commanding performance throughout the rally, leading from Day One with remarkable pace and confidence.

Their times were exceptional, their rhythm unmatched, and stage after stage they continued stretching their advantage over the chasing pack. By the final day, Vohra held what seemed to be an unassailable lead of over eight minutes ahead of Patel. But rallying can change in seconds.

Disaster struck on Competitive Stage 10 when Vohra’s machine suffered a devastating mechanical failure just about two kilometres from the flying finish. Reports indicated that the prop shaft blew, abruptly ending what had been a near-perfect rally for the crew.

In one heartbreaking moment, the rally lead disappeared.

That misfortune opened the door for Patel, who had quietly and strategically kept himself within striking distance despite facing technical challenges earlier in the rally. The two-time African Rally Champion demonstrated exactly why experience matters at the highest level of motorsport.

Rather than forcing the pace recklessly, Patel relied on calculation, consistency, and composure. After overcoming early technical setbacks on Day One, he came alive on Day Two, increasing his speed and mounting pressure on Vohra in what became one of the standout battles of the event.

His patience eventually paid off.

The victory marks Patel’s second consecutive win of the 2026 FIA African Rally Championship season, strengthening his position at the top of the championship standings as the series now heads toward Rwanda and Tanzania.

The triumph also reaffirmed Patel’s champion mentality knowing when to attack, when to protect the car, and how to survive one of the continent’s toughest rallies.

For Uganda, the rally was another major success. Fans turned up in huge numbers across the stages, while the organization, atmosphere, and competitiveness of the event highlighted the continued growth of motorsport in the region.

The Shell V-Power Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally once again reminded everyone why rallying is loved across Africa, in motorsport, nothing is guaranteed until the final stage is completed.

One puncture, one mistake, or one mechanical failure can change everything.

And in Mbarara, it changed the entire story of the rally.
