The executive team of the Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) has been further strengthened with the appointment of new cabinet members. Becky Cynthia Nakimera takes the role of Vice President, Sarah Adong assumes the position of Assistant General Secretary, Dorothy Nkesa becomes the Assistant Organizing Secretary, and Laurian Lubulwa joins as Assistant Treasurer. These additions bolster the leadership alongside President Moses Alsayed Lubega, General Secretary Shafik Ssenoga, Treasurer Amon Ngabo, and Organizing Secretary Francisco Bwambale, who were elected last November.
The appointments mark a pivotal moment in USPA’s governance, ensuring continuity and enhanced organizational capacity. “The roles we bring are the footprints we leave,” remarked Jim Mugunga, urging journalists to reflect on their impact within the profession. Meanwhile, Doroth Doreen Nyekesa and Laurian Lubulwa were duly appointed to the executive committee, reinforcing the association’s administrative structure. Sarah Adong was also confirmed as Assistant Secretary, while Cynthia Nakimera officially joined the committee as a member.
In the sporting realm, USPA unveiled five nominees for the prestigious Nile Special Sports Personality of the Month award. The contenders included the Gazelles, the Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (FUBA), Cricket Cranes, rally driver Posiano Rwakataka, and long-distance runner Jacob Kiplimo. The voting, exclusive to registered USPA members, saw Kiplimo secure the accolade with a commanding 380 votes, edging out the Gazelles, who garnered 275 votes.
The association also recognized outstanding journalism through its monthly awards, celebrating excellence in sports reporting. For February, Solomon Ssaka of Next Media triumphed in the broadcast category for his compelling feature on a female boxer from Kibuli, while Avitus Ngabirano was honored in the print/website category for his analytical piece on the AfroBasket Qualifiers. Arnold Ntambi claimed the Twaake Moment award. In March, Thomas Odong’s article on the Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon won in the print category, with Davis Mugume of Voice of America excelling in broadcast. April saw Gonzaga Kakeeto lauded for his work on the Uganda Badminton League, while Geofrey Mugabi earned recognition for his feature on FUFA President Moses Magogo.
As USPA continues to champion sports excellence and journalism, its evolving leadership structure and commitment to recognizing achievements signal a promising trajectory for the industry. With a dynamic executive team and a dedication to honoring sporting and media excellence, the association remains at the forefront of fostering professionalism and development within Uganda’s sporting landscape
