Katsuta’s Statement: From Breakthrough to Championship Leader in Croatia Drama

The 2026 Croatia Rally will be remembered not just for its unforgiving asphalt and relentless twists but for the moment Takamoto Katsuta announced himself as a true World Rally Championship contender.

This is no longer a rising talent story, this is arrival.

Croatia returned to the FIA World Rally Championship calendar with a vengeance. New stages, dry conditions, but dangerously deceptive surfaces where loose gravel dragged onto tarmac turned precision into survival.

The rally punished even the elite.

Early casualties and mistakes reshaped the leaderboard, but at the front, it was a calculated duel between Katsuta and teammate Sami Pajari. Pajari, chasing a maiden WRC victory, delivered maturity beyond his years, controlling the rally deep into Saturday.

Then came the heartbreak of puncture on SS14 forced Pajari to stop and change a wheel crushing his momentum. Ironically, Katsuta suffered similar tyre drama on the same stage, underlining just how brutal Croatia had become.

But rallying is as much about survival as it is speed.

Heading into Sunday’s Power Stage, the script still had room for one final shock.

Thierry Neuville a constant threat throughout the weekend suffered terminal damage and was forced out. In a rally where fortunes flipped corner by corner, that moment sealed Katsuta’s path to victory.

Together with co-driver Aaron Johnston, Katsuta crossed the line to secure his second consecutive win just weeks after his maiden triumph at the Safari Rally Kenya.

With this result, Katsuta doesn’t just win rallies, he leads the championship.

For the first time in history, a Japanese driver sits atop the WRC standings, driving for a Japanese manufacturer Toyota Gazoo Racing.

It’s a powerful statement not only for Katsuta, but for the entire Toyota legacy in rallying.

And he’s doing it the Katsuta way very calmly under pressure, intelligent tyre management, precision over panic, this isn’t luck. It’s evolution.

Toyota’s strength in depth behind Katsuta, Pajari’s second-place finish completed a dominant 1–2 for Toyota Gazoo Racing World Rally Team a testament to the team’s depth and adaptability.

Even when setbacks hit, someone steps up.

Elsewhere, Oliver Solberg delivered a storming Sunday performance, claiming maximum bonus points, while Elfyn Evans maintained consistency to stay firmly in the title hunt.

The championship fight is tightening but right now, Katsuta holds the momentum.

There was a time when Katsuta was seen as a promising support driver within Toyota’s ranks.

Not anymore.

With composure, consistency, and now consecutive wins, he is carving his place among the sport’s elite alongside the very drivers he once chased.

Croatia wasn’t just another rally win. It was a statement for Takamoto Katsuta belongs at the top.

The WRC now heads to the volcanic asphalt of the Rally Islas Canarias (April 23–26), where high-grip surfaces and mountainous terrain will present a completely different challenge.

The question is no longer whether Katsuta can win.

It’s whether anyone can stop him. In a sport where milliseconds define greatness and misfortune lurks at every corner, Katsuta has found the balance between aggression and intelligence.

Back-to-back victories. Championship leader, History made.

The quiet contender has become the headline act.
