In Ugandan women’s football, retirement announcements are uncommon. Many players quietly step away from the game without formal farewells, leaving fans unaware of when their careers have ended. Margaret Namirimu has chosen a different path, publicly announcing her retirement and offering the recognition that many female footballers rarely receive.
The experienced defender has officially called time on a distinguished playing career that spanned domestic success, international achievement, and meaningful contributions to the growth of women’s football in Uganda. In an emotional farewell message, Namirimu described the decision as one of the most difficult she has ever made. However, she said she leaves the game with immense gratitude for the opportunities, friendships, and unforgettable memories football has given her throughout the years.
Namirimu began her football journey at Muteesa Royal University WFC before establishing herself as one of the country’s dependable defenders at She Corporate FC. It was at the Jinja-based club where she enjoyed the most successful period of her career, helping the team capture the 2021/22 FUFA Women Super League title, the 2024 FUFA Women’s Cup, and the 2024 FUFA Women’s Elite League. She also played a key role in the club’s qualification for the 2022 CECAFA Women’s Champions League Qualifiers. Her achievements extended beyond the domestic stage. Wearing the Uganda Crested Cranes jersey, Namirimu celebrated victory at the 2022 CECAFA Women’s Championship and represented her country at the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), accomplishments she described as some of the defining moments of her football career.
Reflecting on her journey, Namirimu expressed heartfelt appreciation to everyone who supported her along the way, including coaches, teammates, club administrators, supporters, friends, and family. She also used the occasion to inspire the next generation of female footballers, encouraging them to remain patient, work hard, believe in themselves, and never give up on their dreams. Although her playing days have come to an end, Namirimu made it clear that her passion for football remains strong. She revealed her intention to continue serving the game in different capacities, signalling that while one chapter has closed, another is only just beginning.
Her retirement is more than the end of an accomplished career, it is a reminder of the importance of celebrating the women who have helped shape Ugandan football. At a time when many female players leave the sport without recognition, Margaret Namirimu has chosen to depart with gratitude, reflection, and dignity, leaving behind a legacy that will inspire future generations.
