As Uganda prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), the tournament should be viewed not merely as a football spectacle but as a once-in-a-generation sports business opportunity capable of reshaping the country’s economy. Tanzania’s aggressive preparations demonstrate how major sporting events can become engines for tourism growth, infrastructure development and foreign exchange earnings. Uganda now has an opportunity to position sport at the centre of national economic transformation.

Modern sport has evolved beyond competition into a powerful economic industry driven by tourism, media, sponsorship, hospitality and investment. Uganda can leverage Afcon 2027 to build a thriving sports economy by packaging football with tourism experiences, cultural showcases and adventure activities. International fans arriving for matches can be encouraged to extend their stay by visiting destinations such as Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park and Jinja, transforming match-day visitors into tourism consumers.
Tanzania’s model offers Uganda critical lessons in using sports to drive infrastructure investment. Stadium upgrades, improved road networks, expanded accommodation facilities, airport modernization and better transport systems should not only serve Afcon but become lasting assets for the country’s sports and tourism ecosystem. Sports infrastructure today is economic infrastructure; investments made for Afcon can attract future continental tournaments, international events and private sector investments long after the final whistle.

Afcon also presents Uganda with an opportunity to unlock new revenue streams within the sports industry. From merchandising, broadcasting, sponsorships and fan experiences to sports tourism packages and hospitality services, the tournament can inject significant foreign exchange into the economy. Developing skilled personnel in sports management, hospitality, event operations and tourism services will ensure Uganda maximizes the economic value chain created by the championship.

Tanzania has shown that Afcon preparations can extend beyond stadiums into national development planning. Uganda should adopt the same vision by treating Afcon 2027 as a launchpad for a sustainable sports economy. If strategically managed, the tournament can leave behind more than memories and medals—it can create jobs, attract investment, strengthen tourism and establish Uganda as a leading destination for sports business in Africa.
