Bayern and Ajax Set for Nairobi Showdown as Kenya Unveils AFCON 2027 Stadium

Kenya is set to welcome European football royalty when Bayern Munich and Ajax Amsterdam clash in a high-profile friendly on January 5, marking the official opening of the newly constructed Raila Odinga International Stadium in Nairobi. The fixture will bring two of Europe’s most decorated clubs to East Africa, offering local fans a rare opportunity to witness elite football on home soil while placing Kenya in the international sporting spotlight.

The visit will be Bayern Munich’s first-ever trip to Kenya, with the German giants using their winter break to participate in the historic occasion. The new stadium has been developed ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania. The tournament will make history as the first AFCON edition staged across three nations and return the continental championship to East Africa for the first time since Ethiopia hosted it in 1976. Tickets for the January encounter are scheduled to go on sale on November 5 through talantasportscity.com.

The Nairobi encounter will also renew a compelling rivalry between the two clubs, whose European honours include a combined 10 European Cup and UEFA Champions League titles. Their last meeting, in December 2018, produced a dramatic 3-3 Champions League draw, with four goals arriving in the closing 10 minutes. Across their 10 competitive encounters, Bayern and Ajax have each recorded three victories, while four matches have ended level, including their most recent three meetings.

Although Bayern’s African football history has largely been limited to FIFA Club World Cup appearances, the club has previously faced African opposition on the global stage. In 2013, they defeated Guangzhou Evergrande before overcoming Morocco’s Raja Casablanca 2-0 to lift the title. Their other meeting with an African side came in the 2020 Club World Cup, when Bayern beat Egypt’s Al Ahly in the semi-finals, with Robert Lewandowski scoring twice. The German club has also maintained connections with African football through players such as Samuel Kuffour and Sadio Mané, alongside its current African-linked talent, while Senegalese midfielder Bara Sapoko Ndiaye joined from Gambinos Stars Africa in The Gambia.

Beyond the spectacle of the match, the event offers Kenya an opportunity to showcase its sporting infrastructure and strengthen its profile ahead of AFCON 2027. Bayern’s connections with the continent extend to youth development initiatives, including its partnership with Gambinos Stars Africa and support for the FC Bayern Youth Academy in Kigali, Rwanda. The club has also established a relationship with Cameroon’s Petrichor Football Association through its women’s team. With Nairobi preparing to host the European giants, the January fixture is poised to be more than a stadium-opening ceremony: it will be a major moment for Kenyan football and a showcase of East Africa’s growing ambitions on the global stage.
