Cricket Cranes Lose By A Whisker In Abuja As Victoria Pearls Take Centre Stage

Uganda’s Cricket Cranes suffered a heartbreaking one-run defeat to hosts Nigeria in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Sub-Regional Qualifier C in Abuja on Saturday, narrowly missing out on the title after a spirited campaign. The pulsating contest went down to the wire, with the Nigerian hosts clinging to victory as Uganda finished on 147/9 while chasing a target of 148.

Captain Riazat Ali Shah

Captain Riazat Ali Shah spearheaded Uganda’s chase with a commanding 60, keeping the Cricket Cranes within touching distance of a memorable triumph. However, Nigeria held their nerve in the decisive moments to defend their total of 148 all out. With the ball, Joseph Baguma delivered a standout performance, claiming four wickets for 21 runs, but his brilliance ultimately fell just short of inspiring Uganda to victory.

Despite the agonising final setback, Uganda emerged from the tournament with plenty to celebrate, recording four victories in five matches to collect eight points and secure qualification for the Africa Regional Final alongside champions Nigeria. The Cricket Cranes have therefore kept their 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup dream alive, with the next qualification stage offering another opportunity to strengthen their push towards the global showpiece.

As the men regroup from their Abuja heartbreak, the spotlight now swings to the Victoria Pearls, who are preparing to ignite the women’s cricket calendar at the Victoria Series, beginning November 6 at Entebbe Cricket Oval. Uganda will face the United States, Namibia and Rwanda in what promises to be a compelling test of skill, resilience and competitive ambition.

For Ugandan cricket, the near-miss in Abuja and the approaching Victoria Series present two compelling chapters in the national teams’ quest for international success. While the Cricket Cranes turn their attention towards the next hurdle on the World Cup qualification trail, the Victoria Pearls will be eager to seize home advantage and deliver a statement performance before their supporters.
