Lira’s Home Advantage? Kyambogo Question Pitch Quality After 2-1 Defeat

Kyambogo University head coach Lobo Christopher has questioned the quality of Lira University’s playing surface after his side suffered a 2-1 defeat in the University Football League. Lobo attributed the loss partly to the unfamiliar and substandard pitch conditions, which he believes disrupted Kyambogo’s usual style of play. However, despite the setback, the coach remains optimistic about his team’s chances in the remaining fixtures.

Matovu Ramathan

Kyambogo made a promising start, taking the lead in the 21st minute through Matovu Ramathan. However, their advantage lasted just two minutes before Ekeng Emmanuel restored parity for Lira University in the 23rd minute. Both sides went into the break level at 1-1, setting the stage for a competitive second half.

The contest intensified after the restart, with both teams creating opportunities but struggling to find the decisive finish. Lira University won several free kicks, although their efforts were largely dealt with by the Kyambogo goalkeeper. Okello Solomon also had an opportunity from a free kick following the challenges involving Adong Ivan and Onen Rashid, as the hosts continued searching for a breakthrough.

The match also produced moments of tension, with Anene Inno receiving a yellow card after kicking the ball out of the goalkeeper’s hands. Kyambogo, meanwhile, failed to convert several second-half chances, a costly shortcoming that allowed Lira University to secure the decisive goal and claim a 2-1 victory on home soil.

Reacting to the defeat, Lobo praised his players’ effort but maintained that the playing conditions had worked against them. “The boys did well regardless of a 2:1 defeat. This was due to the poor structural grounds that the boys were not used to. But above all, we’re looking forward to winning the next 5 games,” he said. Kyambogo will now turn their attention to the remaining fixtures, hoping to bounce back and turn their coach’s five-game winning ambition into reality.
