Gerald Olipa unleashed a devastating batting assault as Uganda’s Cricket Cranes opened their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Sub-Regional Qualifier C campaign with an emphatic 87-run demolition of Zambia in Abuja, Nigeria, on Tuesday, October 20. Olipa’s explosive 82 off 42 balls, complemented by Joseph Baguma’s four-wicket haul, propelled Uganda to a commanding victory at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium and gave their campaign for a place in the 2028 T20 World Cup qualification pathway an early boost.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Uganda recovered from Robinson Obuya’s early dismissal through Raghav Dhawan’s 23 and captain Riazat Ali Shah’s aggressive 38 off 20 deliveries. Sumeet Verma chipped in with 21 before Olipa seized control, smashing five fours and seven sixes at a strike rate of 195.23. Dropped on 55, the young batter punished Zambia for the reprieve before being bowled in the 19th over. Juma Miyaji then delivered a spectacular late flourish, blasting an unbeaten 11 off just three balls, as Uganda posted an imposing 195/6 in their allotted 20 overs.

Zambia’s chase never gathered the momentum required to threaten Uganda’s total, despite Joyeb Chand’s 38 off 28 balls and Jakir Patel’s 23. Baguma spearheaded the bowling attack with four wickets for 44 runs, while Miyaji claimed three for 17 in three overs to dismantle the middle and lower order. Left-arm spinner Alpesh Ramjani added two wickets for 13 runs in four overs, with Enock Kasaija taking one for 16. Zambia were eventually dismissed for 108 in 17.3 overs, although Uganda will look to tighten their bowling discipline after conceding 13 wides.

Beyond the convincing team performance, the match marked Miyaji’s 50th appearance in T20 International cricket, adding a personal milestone to Uganda’s opening-day success. Olipa, however, took the spotlight as Player of the Match after his match-defining innings. The combination of aggressive batting and disciplined wicket-taking offered Uganda a promising start in a six-team competition where only the top two sides will advance to the Africa Regional Final.
The Cricket Cranes now turn their attention to Lesotho, whom they face on Wednesday, October 21, at 11:30 a.m. East African Time at NCF Oval 2 in Abuja. Uganda will subsequently meet The Gambia on October 23, Mozambique on October 24 and hosts Nigeria on October 25. With a place in the Africa Regional Final at stake, Uganda will be eager to build on Olipa’s fireworks and Baguma’s bowling impact as the race towards the 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup qualification pathway gathers pace.
