Rajiv Ruparelia: A Fast Life Cut Short, But Never Forgotten

They say “the candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long,” and nowhere does that ring truer than in the story of Rajiv Ruparelia, a man who lived life at full throttle, both in business and behind the wheel. Known widely as one of Uganda’s most promising rally drivers, Rajiv was more than just a name; he was a force of nature whose passion for motorsport ignited a national following. From dusty tracks to championship podiums, Rajiv’s journey in rallying brought fresh energy to the sport in East Africa.

Rajiv officially entered competitive rallying in 2019, joining the Ruparelia Rally Team with the determination and charisma that made him an instant fan favorite. He quickly rose through the ranks, securing victories in the Kayunga AutoCross, Kapeeka AutoCross, and the Kabalega Rally. In 2020, he triumphed at the Mbarara Rally, and in 2021, he earned his first National Rally Championship win, solidifying his place among Uganda’s finest. What made Rajiv stand out wasn’t just his skill, but his spirit. Whether cheering on teammates or helping young drivers, he embodied sportsmanship and vision.

While rallying was his passion, Rajiv was also a savvy businessman and the Managing Director of the Ruparelia Group. He balanced boardroom decisions with race day precision, leading a business empire that stretched across real estate, education, hospitality, and banking. Yet, he never let corporate success overshadow his devotion to sports. Through philanthropy and active involvement, he helped uplift motorsport and other disciplines, proving that leadership goes beyond profits, it’s about people.

Tragically, on May 3, 2025, Uganda woke up to devastating news: Rajiv had died in a high-speed crash along the Busabala Flyover in Wakiso District. Driving his beloved Nissan GTR, he lost control and hit concrete barriers recently erected on the road, causing the car to overturn and burst into flames. It was a cruel twist of fate that the man who had tamed some of the continent’s toughest rally routes would meet his end on a poorly marked city road. He was just 35.

In life, Rajiv raced ahead of his time; in death, he leaves behind a legacy that won’t be overtaken. His story is a powerful reminder that greatness isn’t measured only by years lived but by lives touched. As the engines grow silent and the dust settles, Uganda and the world remember not just a rally driver, but a dreamer who chased the finish line with fearless determination, and inspired others to do the same.
