KAMPALA — Uganda Cranes secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Guinea in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole. Allan Okello’s brilliant first-half goal in the 35th minute proved decisive as Uganda climbed to second place in their group with nine points. The Cranes displayed resilience, withstanding relentless pressure from the visitors in the closing moments.

The match began with both sides showing intent, but Uganda capitalized on a rare defensive lapse from Guinea to break the deadlock. Okello, known for his creativity and composure, latched onto a well-timed technically well taken free kick before firing past the goalkeeper Soumaïla Sylla, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. From then on, Uganda adopted a disciplined defensive stance, frustrating Guinea’s attacking efforts.
As the clock ticked down, Guinea intensified their offensive play, committing numbers forward in search of an equalizer. However, Uganda’s defensive duo, led by Timothy Awany and Calvin Kabuye, remained resolute. A late attacking move saw Jude Ssemugabi link up with Kabuye, but the ball drifted out of play, denying Uganda a chance to double their lead.

With three minutes of stoppage time added, the tension in the stadium was palpable. Fans illuminated the stands with their phone lights, rallying behind their team in the dying moments. The Cranes, refusing to buckle under pressure, saw out the game with disciplined defending, securing a monumental victory on home soil.
This win marks a significant step in Uganda’s World Cup qualification campaign, boosting their hopes of making history. As the journey continues, the Cranes will look to build on this performance and carry their momentum forward in the upcoming fixtures
