Dr Danny Jordaan has been re-elected President of the South African Football Association (SAFA), securing a fourth term after defeating his challenger Sandile Zungu in Saturday’s elective congress.
Jordaan emerged with a clear majority, receiving 157 votes against Zungu’s 82, according to results announced by SAFA. The election, held on Saturday, 12 September, came against a tense backdrop after SAFA disclosed that several delegates had received death threats and that others had faced intimidation ahead of the elective congress, despite the concerns raised before the vote, the congress proceeded as scheduled, with delegates ultimately casting their ballots to determine the leadership of South African football for the next term.
Jordaan’s victory extends his long tenure at the helm of SAFA and gives him another mandate to oversee the association at a time when South African football continues to navigate important questions around development, administration, competitions and the national teams. His re-election also maintains continuity in the leadership of one of Africa’s most influential football associations, with SAFA playing a significant role not only in South African football but also within the broader African football landscape.
Zungu, who mounted the challenge against the incumbent, finished with 82 votes.
The election had attracted considerable attention within South African football, particularly given the developments surrounding the congress in the days leading up to the vote. The reported threats and intimidation added an additional layer of concern to an already closely watched leadership contest with the election now concluded, attention will turn to Jordaan’s fourth term and the priorities his administration will set for the development and administration of football in South Africa.
