Kampala, Uganda – February 10, 2025 – Uganda’s national amateur boxing team touched down in Kampala today, proudly returning from the WBC-ABU Amateur Boxing Championship 2025 in Lagos, Nigeria, with an impressive haul of five medals. Their stellar performance on African soil showcased Uganda’s growing dominance in the ring, solidifying its reputation as a rising powerhouse in amateur boxing.
A Battle Worth Fighting
Competing against top-tier boxers from across Africa, the Ugandan fighters exhibited resilience, skill, and unyielding determination. Their efforts were rewarded with three silver and two bronze medals, proving their mettle in one of the continent’s most prestigious boxing tournaments.

Leading the medal charge was:
🥈 Shakur Mugambe – Silver (60kg, Male)
🥈 Batte Nuhu – Silver (69kg, Male)
🥈 Brenda Mudawo – Silver (51kg, Female)
🥉 Dennis Muleme – Bronze (64kg, Male)
🥉 Benon Balyegesa – Bronze (56kg, Male)
Speaking upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport, team captain Shakur Mugambe expressed pride in the team’s performance.
“This was a tough championship, but we fought with heart. Facing strong Nigerian, Ghanaian, and Togolese opponents was a great test, and coming home with five medals proves that Uganda is a force to be reckoned with in boxing,” he said.
A Promising Future for Ugandan Boxing
Uganda’s participation in the championship not only secured podium finishes but also underscored the country’s potential in the global boxing arena. National boxing officials and fans gathered at the airport to welcome the triumphant team, celebrating their courage and commitment.
Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) President, Moses Muhangi, commended the team’s performance, emphasizing the need for continued investment in amateur boxing.
“These young men and women have made Uganda proud. We must build on this success by supporting our boxers with better training facilities, exposure, and international competitions,” he stated.
The WBC-ABU Amateur Tournament presented by Yucateco Boxing was a Big Hit! The first amateur tournament of the World Boxing Council and the African Boxing Union concluded in Lagos, Nigeria, over the weekend saw Nigerian boxers win 10 of the 11 fights decided on the last day of the tournament in very close contests
What’s Next?
With their eyes now set on future international tournaments, the Ugandan boxing team is gearing up for even greater success. The next challenge? The African Boxing Championships later this year, where they will aim to surpass their Lagos achievements.
